Biography

Tom Hutchison is a London-based French horn player, currently pursuing a Master of Performance at the Royal College of Music as an Ian Evans Lombe Scholar. He completed his Bachelor of Music with Honours at the Royal Northern College of Music from September 2019 to July 2023. During his undergraduate studies, Tom honed his skills and gained extensive performance experience, preparing him for advanced studies and a promising career. His dedication and work ethic have earned him exciting opportunities and scholarships, reflecting his commitment to excellence in music. Tom continues to develop his artistry, aspiring to make significant contributions to the world of music.

Experience

Tom has an expanding orchestral background, showcasing his versatility and skill. In November 2023, he performed as 2nd Horn and Utility Horn with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Earlier in 2023, he played 4th Horn and Utility Horn with Opera North in March and July.
Tom has also served as Principal Horn for the Stock Exchange Dramatic and Operatic Society in November 2023, and has been a key member of the Northern Film Orchestra since May 2022, taking on roles as Principal Horn and 3rd Horn. Alongside external opportunities, Tom is fortunate to enjoy many exciting orchestral opportunities at the Royal College of Music, including a recent performance of Olivier Messiaen’s Turangalîla-Symphonie at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, and an upcoming performance of Gustav Holst’s The Planets for the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.

Lessons

Tom’s teaching portfolio has significantly expanded over the past two years. His journey began in Manchester and has continued to develop in London, where he is currently pursuing his studies. In addition to his academic commitments, Tom serves as part of the Assistant Team at the Royal College of Music Junior Department. Tom believes that teaching is an enriching experience and finds reward in helping young musicians progress. Recognizing the importance of nurturing new talent to sustain the industry's vitality, Tom is dedicated to providing tailored tuition that meets the unique needs of each student. He advocates for a collaborative approach in his sessions, aiming to convey concepts through demonstration and experimentation.
